If your horse was reasonably fit before the enforced inactivity he will only need a few easier hacking days to get him going again. Once you have built up your horses work over the next two weeks, doing a little more each time you work him, you should be ready to carry on where you left off.

Have fun and at this time of year think about getting your horses leg fit(long slow work on harder surfaces, mostly walking on roads, and careful trotting on gentle inclines) and then once warmer and going is better, you can focus more on getting overall fitness including the all important "gallop" fitness for you eventers out there (incorporate slow cantering on flat and then gentle hills and then. Start to increase endurance with basic interval training, canter a few minutes untill horse is slightly blowing, then walk, let horse recover his breath and repeat the exercise. Over time you can run more cyles and longer cycles of this pattern, Its that simple.

Wey Valley Riding Club

Wey Valley Riding Club

Promote Your Page Too

Open BE 100 at Tweseldown

Well done Jays Gransun for coming fourth in a hotly contested Open Class at Tweseldown. He is a part Shire horse that has super paces but is build with a slightly downhill body and a very heavy front end. He tends to have jumps down because he is not energetic enough in his canter to get the impulsion to propel himself easily over the fence. It is therefore a fantastic achievement that he managed a double clear last Saturday at Mattingley BE 90. His time XC was still too slow, partially because he still naps and partially because he is slow anyway and tends to back off and slow down at his xc fences to carefully jump them. If we can stop the napping I think he will make the time at Intro, but I think that Intro might be a far as he can go.

Bob ( Jays Gransun) hasnt been eventing this year, mostly du to his owners busy schedule and some credit crunched concerns. However he did play a useful part in the Wey Valley Riding Club's Area Show Jumping, where we qualified for the National Championships at Lincoln, in September.

The Duke of Bartle has been placed 6th and 2nd in his two outings with me, and his owner Sarah Elliott is taking him to Borde Hill for her first intro of the season next week. We wish her the very best of luck.

Brendon Hill Sharp Talk is currently off work due to various concerns regarding her bones and rib cage, a sort of osteoporosis condition, that can be managed, but at the moment she is being rehabilitated slowly.

Up to date

This Blog is well out of date, the event dairy has superceded it but I thought I would put a link in here, so that viewers can see the older blogs from previous years ;-)

Brightling and the Duke does it again with Sarah!

Sarah Elliott owns the Duke of Bartle, and rode him to ninth place at Brightling Horse Trials three years after she began her dream of competing in british eventing horse trials. Sarah is a top level Barrister so she uses Lisa Hamilton to train/coach her and sometimes train her horses to be ready for competitions. Sarah hopes to be taking Bart pre novice next season, Im sure they will do very well.

Jenny Haywood's horse Brendon Hill Sharp Talk was off form at Brightling, one stop show jumping put the end to her chances, even though Lisa rode her around the xc course inside the time as usual. Hard to make the time at Brightling, as a very hilly course with an steep uphill climb at the end.

Next we had Iping. Iping was a successful event for Brendon Hill Sharp Talk, coming 7th in the pre novice, losing an higher placing due to one down show jumping. BHSTalk was far more forward today and I was very pleased with her efforts. Jays Gransun also competed at Iping, he came out of a semi-retirement to contest the OPN, he should have won, but he was so excited in the show jumping, he flattened and had two down, moving him to 5th place after xc.

Coming up we have Mattingley horse trials with Jays Golden Hera and hopefully pre novice with BHSTalk, followed closely by Chilham Aug 3rd, then it will be an august break for al the horses before Firle Place at end of August.

The Duke of Bartle Wins again!

Well the Duke of Bartle won again at Eridge. If you haven't been to Eridge horse trials, I strongly suggest you compete there next year. Its a stunning course with spectacular spectator viewing. However Eridge is not for the faint hearted, the Intro course requires gutsy riding, and the novice and Pre novice need a strong and determined rhythmic line to make it inside the time!

Brendon Hill Sharp Talk managed 11th in the OPN, just missing out on a place because she tipped a rail in the show jumping.

Jays Silver Spirit is out of action due to a virus, he seemed extremely unwilling to jump at west wilts, it was most unlike him, turns out he was very ill, luckily we immed had his blood tested after his poor event and he is now on medication and getting better fast, but wont make it back til the end of the season.

Iping Cross country clinic took place today and went really well. Everyone who came seemed to enjoy themselves and take away some a little more of the vital confidence needed to go strongly clear cross country.

My schoolmaster is sadly still lame, he has serious inflammation of his suspensory. I am about to try cold laser treatments, but it seems only time will heal. He is the gentlest kindest horse I know, and I am fighting to do everything I know to get him right, if hes not better by october, then i have to consider surgery which is a risky strategy, that i would rather avoid.

July is a very busy month, I will be at Brightling, Iping and Mattingley horse trials, and have taken on photographing the courses for Equineaffairs.com so that will make me extra fit, walking and cataloguing each jump at all levels ;-0

XC clinic at Tweseldown July 8th
For more information or to reserve a place call 07786911567

Good start to season

Munstead Horse Trails in Godalming Surrey, went rather well for me this year. A win on Bartle ( Duke of Bartle) in PN, a seventh on Rosa ( brendon Hill Sharp Talk) in PN and a very creditable 11th for Hera in the Intro.

I was thrilled with all of them and particualarly Hera (Jays Golden Herea) who seemed to be braver and easier to ride than last season...Her show jumping still needs lot of work but at last she is going forward and her cross country was super and very brave indeed.

Next two horse trials Goring and South of England wre cancelled due to adverse conditions it was such a wet 4 weeks, so Bartle has nothing till Nurstead Court, Here will be coming out at Mattingley and Rosa also. Bigger gap than I would have liked between events but cant be helped, lets see what May brings weather wise, hopefully the spring has rained itself out now ;-)

Plan with Bartle is to do a novice asap, but as Sarah wants to win a few events first with him, he probably wont come out novice till Iping. Iping is a tricky course as hilly, but it is a fair test and I think Bartle can do it.

Rain, rain and more rain

Well its still raining, and so far I don't seem to be able to get to an event. hoping to do the novice regional final this weekend on Bob (Jays Gransun) at Tweseldown but if it keeps raining...its not looking good for the event to run...but maybe it will be sunny over next few days!!

So thinking positively I went jumping today with Robert Stevens...Really nice guy Robert and he has been very helpful as eyes on the ground, as well as Cressy Clague-Reading. Every rider needs eyes on the ground, even more so for jumping I feel, as there is no sheet of feedback in the show jumping arena. Going clear help us know we are doing well, but it does not help us identify how to get even better, or how to know when to move up or where the little details are just keeping us out of the ribbons.

"Jumping canter" is required for successful clear rounds, energy become even more important as the height of the fences goes up. Get a good enough canter and balanced rhythmic approach and your horse can jump anything! the more bounce and if in the canter, the more engaged the horse, the more it will be able to jump from any stride, and if you have rhythm a good stride will be easier to see. the best old fashioned method of counting strides between fences still works as a way to help a rider hear their rhythm and to learn to create a regular stride pattern , that will enable the rider to shorten or lengthen it when required.

So many students ask me, "how do I see a stride?" it is seriously the most commonly asked question in jump lessons, and the answer is always the same, firstly truly seeing a stride is a matter of time and practice, but don't worry too much about it because until you get into the seriously big stuff over 1.20m for eg., as long as your horse is balanced and has a jumping canter and a rhythmic approach he can manage to jump even if he is late or early to jump. Remember also that the horse can really only be half a stride wrong, and as long as he has his hocks under him he can jump well even from a slightly wrong stride.

The top riders seem to always get the stride right, or do they? is it possibly that as their horses are well educated on the flat and well ridden in a good jumping canter that when they get it wrong you hardly notice? Well there is some food for thought.

Now lets see if it rains this weekend after all. ;-)

My Horses pre 2006

Hana and Holly

Hana came to me as a client several years ago, then took a break of a few years from riding but last autumn she finally purchased her own horses, one of which you see here, Holly. Holly is now regrettably for sale as Hana doesn't really have time for her, and Holly likes to do lots of work. Holly is 16hh, 10 years old, tb/wb cross, and has 2 BE horse trials points, 6 clears at novice xc, clean jumper, with nice paces and great to hunt. Holly is currently in Fernhurst, Surrey at livery, where she is open to any trial. He was better in the xc but we fell foul of the bogey fence! there was a corner on a hard right hand turn immediately after the water jump, ( a recent addition to the course, they already had one water, this is the second one). I have grown to trust bob with corners since our past issues with them, so when I walked the line, I was not unduly worried about this fence...as usual I should have considered whenever im complacent to double the effort....for when I actually rode through the water and made the right handed turn to the corner, Bob was surprised to see a corner in front of him , i had not given him time to observe what he had to do, and he stopped dead, leaving me sulkily turning him for a second attempt. As it was clearly not Bobs day, he stopped again, very out of character for him, and although I blame myself for the first stop, Bob get the blame for the second, he was being rather resistant to stop again....we made it over on our final attempt, and completed the rest of the course without mishap. Yet again the lesson is never ever think something is easy, always look at all the possibilities and walk the line....I didnt not walk through the water to walk the real line to the corner, thats why it came up faster than I anticipated, so remember alwaya take your wellies and walk through the water, particularly if theres an awkward line to take!!!!

Due to Bobs lethargy at South of England horse trials, we have had him blood tested and his heart and lungs checked out, apart from a little wheeze in his left lung, he was fine, some ventiplulmin was administered, and it is assumed that the problem is due to the high temperatures and dust with pollen so early in the season.

We are going to get Bob superfit now, so that he can combat his lethargy by being full of energy, and we have added more oil to his diet to fuel him!

No events for a month, next outing Mattingley horse trials, near Basingstoke in Hampshire with Bob at Novice, Hera at Intro, and Rosa at Pre novice, should be a fun three days!
